How to hang art at home like a gallery (the rule nobody tells you)

The rule galleries use — and nobody tells you about

Most people hang art too high. You hold the piece against the wall, it looks roughly right, you hammer the nail — and then step back and something feels slightly off. The room feels a little crowded, the piece a little disconnected, and you can't quite explain why.

The fix is simpler than you think.

Every professional gallery hangs art the same way: the centre of the artwork sits at 145 cm from the floor. Not the top of the frame, not the hook — the centre of the piece itself. That height matches average adult eye level, which is why art in galleries always feels natural without anyone knowing exactly why.

How to do it

Mark 145 cm from the floor lightly in pencil — that's where the visual centre of your piece should land. Then measure half your frame's height to find how far the top sits above that mark. Your nail position sits above 145 cm by the distance from the taut hanging wire to the top of the frame.

The exceptions

Above a sofa or sideboard: forget the 145 cm rule. What matters here is the visual connection between art and furniture. Leave 15–20 cm between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the frame. Less and it looks crammed. More and the art looks like it's floating away.

Gallery wall: don't think about each frame separately. Treat the whole arrangement as one single piece, find the centre of the group, and place that at 145 cm.

Why it matters

Art hung at the wrong height changes how an entire room feels. Too high and the space feels crowded at ceiling level, empty at eye level.
